So… since when did people start sitting in offices, and why? Some would argue that during the construction of the Egyptian pyramids, the first office spaces were allocated to the Egyptian economy, finance, and registration people.
From the fifth century BC, large office buildings were built in Rome and Greece for the purposes of organizing the collection of taxes, planning water transport projects and building bridges in these countries’ cities. At about the same time, the first offices were also observed in China.
The co-working spaces are probably not a new invention and, at best case, a new trend. According to the Harvard Business Review, in the 15th century, common spaces were established in Florence for artists, architects, and engineers from different disciplines to work in these physical proximities and encourage the sharing of common ideas. At that time, the invention of printing, the intensification of shipping companies and the development of the central banks in Stockholm, Amsterdam and London caused the industry acceleration.
In the 19th century, the development of trains and railway companies caused the most significant connection between the areas and states in US and, together with the development of communication, had a decisive influence on the work shape of offices all over the world.
According to Yale University the percentage of Americans working in companies of over 500 employees was zero in the early 19th century and in 2000, exceeded 50%.
